Maruti Baleno Sells More Than Hyundai Grand i10 and Elite i20 Put Together

Carmakers have registered a sales drop on a YOY basis for almost all of their products for the month of March 2020. Maruti has, as usual, performed better than the rest. The carmaker’s premium hatchback offering, Baleno, registered a fall of 34 per cent on a YOY basis but the total sales figures of the car are still much higher than the combined total of Hyundai Grand i10 and Elite i20 sold in March 2020.

Maruti Baleno outsells Hyundai Grand i10 and Elite i20 combined together in the month of March.

Maruti, in March 2019, sold a total of 17,264 units of the Baleno, while this year, in March, the carmaker could only sell 11,406 units. Talking of the Hyundai, the manufacturer sold 7,225 units of the Grand i10 last year but experienced a drop of 41 per cent as it could retail only 4,293 units of the new-gen hatchback last month. The Elite i20 registered a sale of 12,172 units in March 2019, but this year, the carmaker could manage to sell only 3,455 units of the car. This corresponds to a whopping 72 per cent drop.

Maruti recently discontinued the diesel engine variant of the Baleno, and it now comes with 2 petrol engine options only – 83 PS 1.2L K12M petrol and 90 PS K12N petrol. It is offered with 2 gearbox options – 5-speed MT and a CVT. Hyundai Grand i10 is a smaller car than the Baleno and comes with a 1.2L Kappa engine, which is also shared with the bigger Elite i20. Hyundai has also discontinued the diesel engines on these cars while making them BS-6 compliant.

That said, Hyundai is working on to launch the next-generation Elite i20 in the country. The car was unveiled recently and features a sporty exterior and a premium interior. It is expected to come with 3 engine options. It will retain the current 1.2L Kappa motor. However, there will be a new 1.5L diesel engine along with a 1.0L turbo-petrol motor from the Venue. With the new Elite i20 in the market, these dwindling sales figures are expected to see a rise to match shoulder with the Baleno on the sales graph.
