Maruti Brezza Outsells Kia Sonet in January 2021, Hyundai Venue Tops Sales Tally

The Hyundai Venue takes the crown of the highest-selling compact SUV in January. The Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Kia Sonet round out the podium. Full story below.

The compact-SUV segment in the Indian auto market has seen exponential growth. The competition in this segment is fierce with new models from different automakers being launched on a regular basis. Reports show that compact-SUVs contributed 18% of the total passenger vehicle sales in January 2021. Furthermore, the segment has seen a 90% YoY growth for the month of January in 2021.

Maruti Brezza Outsells Kia Sonet in January 2021, Hyundai Venue At Numero Uno

The Hyundai Venue was the highest-selling compact-SUV, recording a sales of 11,779 units in January which is a 75% growth on a YoY basis from the sales figures of January last year. The Maruti Vitara Brezza came in second with a sales figure of 10,623 units in January. That is a 5% growth compared to the same month last year when it sold 10,134 units. The Kia Sonet rounds up the podium with 8,859 units sold last month. The Sonet has proven to be a major success for the South Korean automaker and has been consistently in the top-three highest-selling compact-SUVs in India since its launch last year.

Coming in fourth is the Tata Nexon, selling 8,225 units in January 2021 compared to 3,382 units sold in the same month last year. The Nexon has seen a massive growth of 143% in YoY sales and it is mainly due to the mid-life facelift it received which brought in new styling and even more features. The Mahindra XUV 300 comes in at fifth-place with 4,612 units selling last month, and sees a 37% YoY growth, selling 3,360 units in January last year.

The latest entry in the segment, the Nissan Magnite enters the list at sixth place with 3031 units sold in January 2021. The Magnite’s aggressive pricing has given it the much-needed success that Nissan had been hoping for, and due to its high demand, it currently has a waiting period stretching to 8 months.

Toyota-Suzuki JV’s second product to be introduced, the Toyota Urban Cruiser comes in next with 3,005 units being sold last month. Rounding out the top ten are the Ford EcoSport, Honda WR-V, and the Mahindra TUV 300. The Ford EcoSport sold 2,266 units last month, which is a 41% YoY decline compared to January 2020. The Honda WR-V registered sales of 1,211 units in January 2021, compared to just 116 units sold last year. The Mahindra TUV 300 hasn’t registered any sales as the outgoing model has been discontinued, but reports suggest that a new version may launch sometime this year.
