The new 1.5L DDiS 225 diesel motor, which is going to power the Maruti Ciaz, S-Cross, And Vitara Brezza in the near future, can deliver a maximum power/torque output of 95 PS/225Nm.

In August 2018, the Indian largest auto manufacturer introduced the upgraded Maruti Ciaz with a 1.5L K15B 4-cylinder petrol SHVS motor which is good for a maximum power of 104.7 PS and 138 Nm. In November 2018, the same engine was also used to be the power source of the second-gen Ertiga, which is underpinned by the Heartect platform.

Despite currently managing to adhere to the BSIV norms, this 1.5L petrol needs to be updated to comply with the forthcoming stricter BSVI emission standards. On the other hand, the 1.3L diesel motor sourced from Fiat will soon be excluded from the engine options for the Maruti Ciaz and other Maruti products due to its inability to be tuned to conform to the BSVI standards.

The current 1.3L diesel motor on the Maruti Ciaz will soon be phased out from the Indian auto market

Maruti Suzuki has developed a new 1.5L DDiS 225 diesel motor with 4 cylinders to replace the 1.3L unit which will soon be phased out from the Indian market in April 2020. Despite lacking a mild-hybrid technology, it is much more powerful than the current 1.3L unit and more importantly, will manage to meet the upcoming BSVI requirements.

The new motor can churn out 95 PS against 225 Nm, which is higher by around 7 PS and 25 Nm as compared to the existing one. This engine will be coupled with a 6-speed MT gearbox. Despite not having a good mileage as the current motor due to the absence of the SHVS tech, the new engine will run more smoothly. The dual mass flywheel has helped reduce the vibrations, which leads to better NVH levels.

The engine will be adopted to power the Ciaz first and then make its way to other vehicles of Maruti in India. The second one to be powered by the brand-new 1.5L diesel motor is another medium-sized sedan, the Maruti Ertiga. The S-Cross, which is only available with the outgoing Fiat-sourced 1.3L diesel engine, has also been reported to receive the new motor to fulfil the BSVI requirements. Last but not least, the Indian best-selling SUV, the Maruti Vitara Brezza, which has received complaints about the less powerful engine as compared to its competitors, is also expected to get access to the new engine for a remarkable power boost.
