Maruti could Launch 32 kmpl Swift Hybrid in India

Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, had recently showcased a range of EV and hybrid tech at the Auto Expo 2020. As a part of the company’s ‘Mission Green Million’ theme, Maruti plans on selling nearly a million electrified vehicles in India in the near future. One car that might be included in this plan will be the Swift Hybrid.

While a majority of the buzz at Maruti’s stall at Auto Expo was around the Futuro-e concept, there were quite a few eyeballs on the Suzuki Swift hybrid too. The car had made its international debut back in 2018 at the Indonesian Motor Show, and is currently being sold in Japan. It is powered by a 1.2-litre inline-4 petrol engine which makes 91 PS of max power and 118 Nm of peak torque. That engine is paired to a 5-speed AMT and a 10 kW Motor/Generator with a 48V hybrid system.

The JDM-version of the Suzuki Swift achieves a brilliant fuel-mileage figure of 32 kmpl. This figure, however, will not translate directly into the India-spec model. It should be noted that the roads in Japan are way better than what we have in India, and the fuel quality is a grade better too. That said, we expect the Swift hybrid to push close to 30 kmpl anyways, which is also quite phenomenal, when driven carefully in India.

Visually, there is not much that separates the Swift Hybrid from its regular version. Up front, there is a slightly updated grille, while the side profile gets a different set of alloy wheels. At the rear, the only tell-tale sign of a greener powerplant is the badge on the tailgate. Apart from these, theres little else to help you differentiate between this and the regular version. In the Indian market, Maruti Suzuki already sells the Baleno, Ciaz, Ertiga, and XL6 with a 12V mild-hybrid system, which is essentially a start-stop system. While not a full hybrid system, the mild-hybrid Maruti cars help improve fuel-efficiency by a small margin. With the end of diesel-powered Maruti vehicles post-BS6-deadline, it makes sense for the company to shift to alternate tech to appeal to the mileage-hungry masses.
