In May 2020, Maruti Dzire was able to retain its position as the best selling subcompact sedan in India, beating rivals like Hyundai Aura/Xcent by a huge margin.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited, India’s largest carmaker, has enjoyed a lot of success with its sub-4-metre sedan, the Dzire. In fact, Maruti Dzire has almost always been the bestseller in its segment. Now that the lockdown is slowly receding, the sales of the Dzire are rising once again, propelling it to the top of the sales chart once again.

Maruti Dzire More Than 6 Times More Popular Than Hyundai Aura In May 2020

In May 2020, Maruti Suzuki was able to ship 2,215 units of the Dzire. In comparison, Hyundai was able to dispatch only 349 units of the Aura and the Xcent combined. According to these numbers, Maruti Dzire was able to sell more than 6 times better than the Aura! Still, compared to last year, the sales performance is quite dismal. In May 2019, Maruti was able to sell a whopping 16,196 units of the Dzire, which was more than 7 times the current sales volume. As for Hyundai, the sales of the Xcent (Aura was not launched during that time) amounted to 1,694 units, which is a little below five times the current sales figure.

Maruti Dzire was recently updated with a facelift earlier this year, along with mechanical upgrades for the engine as well. It only has one engine option, a 1.2-litre, naturally aspirated, inline-4, petrol engine (Dualjet) with 90 PS and 113 Nm of max power and peak torque, respectively. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, and a 5-speed AMT is also available as an option.

Hyundai Aura, on the other hand, is available with three engine options. The first one is a 1.2-litre, naturally aspirated, inline-4 petrol engine with 83 PS and 114 Nm. The second one is a 1.2-litre, turbocharged, inline-4 diesel engine with 75 PS and 190 Nm. The third one is a 1.0-litre, turbocharged, inline-3, petrol engine with 100 PS and 172 Nm. A 5-speed manual is standard, while a 5-speed AMT is available on select trims. As for the Xcent, it is available with the same 1.2L petrol and diesel engines as the Aura. A 5-speed manual is the only available choice of transmission here.
