Maruti Jimny Sierra Spied Testing in India for the FIRST Time Ever!

For the past few months, the new Maruti Jimny has appeared in numerous headlines of automotive newspapers in India with reports on its launch. According to some reports, the three-door version of the SUV will not be launched in India as the demand for a 3-door SUV is not available in India. On the other hand, other reports claim that the Maruti Suzuki is going to launch a 5-door version of the SUV in India. Regardless of what the reports say, the Maruti Jimny has been spotted testing in India for the first time. The SUV was spied when the car was being tested in Gurgaon, near the manufacturing plant of Maruti Suzuki.

Featuring a bold stance, the test mule comes with a white paint scheme. It looks tall and sturdy with a good pickup. According to the video, the driver is making every effort to steer away from the paparazzo. As regards the motors, the new Maruti Jimny receives its power from a K15B 1.5-litre gasoline burner which can generate 102 PS against 130 Nm and is mated to a 5-speed MT/4-speed AT. This is also the motor that serves as the power source for the Maruti XL6, Brezza, Ertiga and Ciaz. The Maruti Jimny comes with both a 2WD and a 4WD system.

In the Indian auto market, the Maruti Jimny is expected to be a substitute for the Maruti Gypsy which has recently been discontinued. On being asked about the possibility of launching the 3-door version of the Maruti Jimny in India, Maruti Suzuki India official stated that the three-door SUV is a very niche segment in India and is not feasible for the Indian auto market. In the meanwhile, the Mahindra Thar, which was available in only the 3-door version, has been warmly welcomed by the Indian SUV enthusiasts with bookings crossing 10k units and waiting period extending up to three months.

Considering this, the Indian largest automaker may change its mind and launch the 3-door Jimny in India or test it for export purpose. Maruti Suzuki is likely to launch the 4-door Jimny by 2021 in India through the CBU/CKD route and the India-spec 5-door Jimny by 2023. That the Maruti Jimny has started being tested in India certainly comes as a good news for the Indian SUV enthusiasts, especially Maruti Gypsy fans.
