As confirmed by Maruti, the Omni will be discontinued by 2020. The other van in Maruti’s line-up, the Eeco, will take place of the Omni.

Maruti Omni is among the oldest nameplates in India, but by 2020, we will have to send our goodbye to this long-standing van. Maruti Omni has to face this undesired farewell mainly because it could not meet the upcoming emission and safety standards.

The new safety regulations require all cars on sale to be armed with at least a driver airbags, ABS, speed warning alert and seat belt reminder for the front seats alongside with parking sensor. As the Maruti Omni will, in all likelihood, not meet the new requirements, it will need to be either updated or replaced.

If Maruti provides the Omni with a new list of compulsory safety technology, its price will soar up, which will shatter its core selling point – the affordability.  Moreover, if the Maruti Omni want the pass the new-amended crash-test that will come into effect since October 2019, there are more rework needed to be done to the body construction, not the mention the essential new BSVI emission norms to arrive in April 2020. The upcoming BSVI will also call for updates given to the engines range. The cost of all these overhaul work will sharply escalate the price. Therefore, despite the high demand, the Omni is still not going to live on.

RC Bhargava, Chairman, Maruti Suzuki India, also hinted on the replacement of the Omni by the Eeco. Even a van, the Eeco is a more current and modern model than the Omni. It would make more sense to upgrade this model line and fill the space left by the Omni. So, in the future, we will see the Eeco to get a new BSVI-complaint engine, and specific updates on the body structure to withstand the new crash test.

The recent Maruti Omni is priced from 2.82-3.06 lakh. On the other hand, Maruti Eeco is a tad costlier, ranging from 3.37 to 4.43 lakh.
