Maruti S-Cross has clocked 1.5k sales last month, marking the highest YoY sales decline in years.

In 2015, Maruti S-Cross was launched with two diesel engines, a 1.6-litre unit and a 1.3-litre motor. However, after receiving the facelift, the 1.6-litre engine was discontinued. At the time being, there is only one engine available, which is the less powerful 1.3-litre oil burner. The mill develops a maximum power of 89 BHP and a peak torque of 200 Nm. The discontinuation of the larger 1.6-litre diesel engine has partly contributed to the decrease in sales of the Maruti S-Cross over the years. Reportedly, even the 1.3-litre engine is going to be ceased soon. The news has drastically affected the already-low sales of the S-Cross. Last month, the crossover from Maruti hit the biggest sales drop.

In May 2019, Maruti S-Cross registered total sales of 1,507 units, which marked a drop of 67.31 per cent in YoY comparison. At the same time last year, the sales figure stood at 4,610 units.

Last month, sales numbers of the Maruti S-Cross dropped by 44 per cent as per YoY comparison

However, Maruti S-Cross is not the only one that is witnessing the sales drop. Another UV from Maruti – the Maruti Brezza – is also facing a massive sales decrease. Maruti Brezza is the best-selling model in the compact SUV space. But in the current month, this long-reigning model recorded a fall of 44 per cent in YoY growth. The Brezza sold only around 9,000 units last month, against 15.000 units sold in the same month last year. Last month, Maruti registered a dip of 24 per cent in the domestic market, which is the highest decline in many years.

Other models of Maruti, Maruti Brezza, for example, are also facing the sale drop

In the following months, to reverse the falling sale trend, Maruti will introduce a wide range of new cars, including the Maruti S-Cross petrol. Since launch, Maruti S-Cross was only available with diesel engine only. The addition of the petrol engine is expected to receive a positive response from the market. It is speculated that the new petrol S-Cross variant will be powered by the 1.5-litre K15B smart hybrid petrol engine. With a maximum power of 105 BHP and a peak torque of 138 Nm, this engine is used on the Maruti Ciaz and the new-gen Ertiga.
