Maruti Suzuki is aiming to add a few more CNG models in its product line-up. The latest addition in the company’s CNG line-up is S-Presso.

India’s biggest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki has no plans to introduce BS6-compliant oil burner for the small cars. The automaker believes that diesel cars do not have any economic viability as our market is gradually shifting towards gasoline vehicles. The carmaker is not planning to expand its CNG car lineup to regain the lost market share.

As per PTI, Shashank Srivastava, MSI Executive Director Sales & Marketing said, “There is absolutely no logic in developing a small diesel engine. It is less than 5 per cent in the hatchback segment and has reduced considerably in sedans and entry-level SUV segment as now economics does not support it.”

Depending on the market demand for diesel-powered big SUVs and sedan, the carmaker can introduce bigger BS6-compliant oil burner at a later stage. Maruti Suzuki has an aim to retail around 1.4 to 1.5 lakh S-CNG cars this financial year, compared to 1.07 lakh units sold last financial year. The carmaker has plans to sell 10 lakh vehicles with green technology over the next few years. The CNG-equipped cars are more affordable than regular diesel models and are also much cheaper to run. In spite of the 18 per cent decline in the passenger vehicle segment, the CNG segment grew by 7 per cent last financial year. Right now, the carmaker is offering 8 models with factory fitted CNG kits.

Moreover, the Indian government is also planning to increase the number of CNG stations by next year. There are a total of 1900 CNG stations in close to 195 cities in India. Maruti S-Presso is the latest CNG offering by the carmaker. It is offered in four different trim levels namely- Lxi, Lxi(O), Vxi and Vxi(O). The CNG equipped Maruti S-Presso is powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder motor that produces 58bhp of peak power and 78 Nm of torque. The engine is rated to offer 31.2 kmpl of mileage. The Maruti S-Presso CNG is priced between Rs 4.84 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) to Rs 5.14 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
