Maruti Suzuki Baleno is the best-selling premium hatchback in India currently. We take a look at some of the reasons for its immense success.

Even with the launch of newer rivals like the Tata Altroz and the new-gen Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno remains the highest-selling premium hatchback in the country. The automaker has just announced that the Baleno has sold over 9 lakh units in India. The premium hatchback crossed the 8 lakh milestone back in October 2020. This means Maruti has sold 1 lakh units in just 5 months. Today we take a look at some of the reasons for the Baleno being the dominant premium hatchback in India.

The Maruti Baleno has one of the biggest cabins in the segment and it is one of its strongest points. Even people taller than 6ft can fit in easily in the rear seats due to its generous legroom, with the hatchback also proving enough shoulder room to fit three adults in relative comfort.

Driving the Maruti Baleno is also a stress-free experience. It comes with a soft suspension setup which gives it a comfortable ride while the cabin has low NVH levels, keeping most of the noises out or at a minimum. Speaking of driving, an important highlight of the Baleno has to be its refined engine options. There are two options, both 1.2-litre petrol units. The K series motor churns out 83 PS and 113 Nm of peak power and torque while the Dualjet engine produces max power and torque 90 PS and 113 Nm, respectively. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual or a CVT auto. The Dualjet engine comes with Smart Hybrid tech which enables the Baleno to have an idle start/stop feature that gives it an ARAI rated fuel efficiency figure of 23.87 kmpl.

Another big reason for the Maruti Baleno being the highest-selling premium hatchback will be the hassle-free ownership experience and wide service network. Maruti has the most expansive service and sales network of any automaker in the country, and that brings ease of accessibility that is difficult to beat. Maruti’s vehicles are one of the most affordable ones to maintain, even though prices have risen over time.

Prices for the Maruti Baleno range between Rs 5.90 lakh – Rs 9.10 lakh, ex-showroom. Though it may not have all the latest cutting-edge features and creature comforts, this also lets the Baleno be less expensive than its direct rivals like Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz. This makes the Baleno one of the most value-for-money offerings in the premium hatchback segment.
