Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza Outsells Toyota Urban Cruiser Threefold

The subcompact SUV segment is currently the fastest growing and most competitive category in the Indian auto market. Currently, there are 9 different offerings in the segment across a varied price range, giving customers the luxury of multiple options, making the category even more cutthroat. Even with so many competitors, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza continues to be dominant. And yet again, the Vitara Brezza has topped the sales charts for subcompact SUVs in March 2021.

11,274 units of the Maruti Vitara Brezza were sold in March 2021, making it the highest-selling subcompact SUV and second highest selling compact SUV overall. The Vitara Brezza even came 8^th on the top 10 highest selling vehicles list for March 2021. Currently, the Maruti’s subcompact SUV is in a tight battle for the top spot with the Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet, the three trading places each month.

Interestingly, the Maruti Vitara Brezza’s close sibling, the Toyota Urban Cruiser only sold around one-third of the Maruti’s sales at 3,162 units. However, Toyota did record an MoM growth of 24% with Urban Cruiser recording sales of 2,549 units in February 2021. This is surprising, as the Urban Cruiser provides a little better ownership experience. Toyota offers a standard warranty period of 3 years/1,00,000 km compared to the Vitara Brezza’s 2 years/40,000km. Although Toyota has the advantage in warranty, the popularity of the Vitara Brezza proves the brand value and customer loyalty Maruti has built over the years.

Prices for the Maruti Vitara Brezza currently range between Rs 7.39 lakh and Rs 11.20 lakh while the Toyota Urban Cruiser is priced between Rs 8.40 lakh – Rs 11.30 lakh. Do note all prices are ex-showroom. Both subcompact SUVs are powered by the same 1.5-litre four-pot petrol that churns out 105 PS and 138 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque converter automatic, sending power to the front wheels only.
