Maruti Suzuki has officially discontinued the Swift diesel in the Indian market. Earlier, the hatchback was powered by Fiat's 1.3-litre Multijet oil-burner.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has now officially discontinued the Swift diesel in India. Maruti Swift was the first vehicle from the carmaker to be powered by Fiat’s 1.3-litre Multijet unit. It was quite popular among the customers for its fun-to-drive characteristics along with a high fuel-efficiency and reliability. Sadly, Maruti discontinued the oil-burner offered with the Swift hatchback because the carmaker decided to update it as per the BS6 emission norms. Also, the company doesn't even plan to bring back the diesel version of its hot-selling B1-segment hatchback anytime soon. The 1.3-litre diesel unit powering the Swift churns out 75 PS of power and 190 Nm of peak torque.

The first two generation models of the car were only offered with a 5-speed manual transmission, but afterwards, with the third generation, the automaker introduced a 5-speed AMT gearbox. The 1.3-litre diesel engine was also known as the national engine of the country as it went on to power a dozen other cars in the market. The last units of this diesel mill were rolled out from Fiat’s Ranjangaon production facility in January this year.

The diesel unit was pretty well suited to the hatchback’s character. Now, Maruti is offering the Swift hatchback only with a 1.2-litre NA K-series gasoline engine that produces 83bhp of peak power and 113 Nm of twisting force. Transmission duties are done by a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. Recent reports suggest that the carmaker is also planning to introduce a more potent Dualjet petrol unit for the hatchback. This powertrain option was recently introduced with the 2020 Dzire facelift. The Dualjet unit offers 90bhp of maximum power.

Recently, Maruti has also updated the Swift hatchback with the new SmartPlay Studio infotainment system. It offers features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, average fuel economy and low fuel warning. The hatchback rubs shoulders with the likes of Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Ford Figo. Currently, the BS6 Maruti Swift is retailed at a starting price of Rs 5.19 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
