Maruti Swift registered 14,218 units sale last month, which is 26% lower than the same month last year.

Maruti Swift is among the most sold model in the market. The Swift has set the standard for the premium hatchback segment. The ongoing version of the Swift was introduced last year. After launch, the new Swift received a positive response from the market. The third-gen Swift is the fastest model to cross 1 lakh booking in India. However, one year after launch, the Swift has started to lose out its initial heat. Last month, Swift’s sales saw the YoY drop of 26 per cent with only 14,218 units sold.

Maruti Swift is built on the lightweight Heartect Platform which is shared among various Maruti models including the Dzire, Baleno and Ignis. At the moment, Maruti has been working on expanding the use of this platform to other segments. Previously, the new-gen Ertiga and Wagon R are also underpinned by this platform. Notably, the recent generation updates on the Wagon R has worked wonder in boosting the sales volume. In January, one month before its generation upgrade takes off, Wagon R registers the total sales of 10,000 units. In March, one month after its launch, the sales surged to 16,000 unit mark. The thriving of the Wagon R is in contrast with the recent drop in sales of Maruti Swift.

Maruti Wagon R is deemed to be the reason for Swift's sale decline

Before the arrival of Wagon R, Maruti Swift is doing well with over 18,000 units sold each month. Possibly, Wagon R’s increasing appeal has negatively affected the Swift’s sale volume. The 2019 Wagon R has adopted Swift’s 1.2-litre K series petrol. In this case, Wagon R’s petrol option is more appealing than the Swift. To put it into perspective, let’s put the high-spec Wagon R ZXi AMT and Swift’s top-of-the-line Swift ZXi AMT (both are powered by the 1.2-lire K Series) into comparison. Wagon R would be more favourable as it is 1.6 lakh cheaper than the Swift with basically the same powertrain setting.

However, it is too soon to conclude that it’s Wagon R that has directly doomed Swift’s sales. We need to observe the sales chart in the upcoming months to see if Wagon R is the main cause of Swift’s sales drop.
