It is widely reported that Maruti Suzuki is working with Toyota on an all-new compact SUV which will compete against the likes of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in India. According to a new report, the Maruti-Toyota JV (joint venture) is developing an all-new C-segment vehicle for the Indian market. In all likelihood, this new SUV will be available in both five-seater and seven-seater configurations. Up to this point, there are not many details about this particular Maruti Toyota JV. However, it is expected that the new C-segment vehicle will be underpinned by the Toyota Raize platform. According to the reports, Maruti is set to launch the new Jimny, a new Hyundai-Creta-rivalling mid-size SUV, two versions of Maruti Brezza, along with the co-developed Maruti Toyota C-segment SUV.

While nothing is confirmed yet by the homegrown car manufacturer, it is believed that Maruti Suzuki will launch this car under the name Grand Vitara. This SUV is expected to hit the market in the next few years. Moreover, according to recent rumours, Maruti will bring back the diesel engine to its range after discontinuing the entire diesel line-up. The diesel engine in question is the 1.5-litre BSVI oil burner which is likely to power the Vitara Brezza, XL6 and Ertiga. Previously, under the BSIV avatar, this unit was capable of making 94 BHP and 225 Nm.

However, it is unlikely that this engine will be brought to the new C-segment SUV as it is quite small and underpowering for a vehicle of this size. Instead, Maruti and Toyota will employ a bigger diesel unit. To put things into perspective, two of its rivals, the Harrier and Hector, are powered by a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre MJD diesel engine which puts out 170 BHP and 350 Nm.

About the petrol engine version, it is likely that the 1.5-litre petrol engine will be used on the new Maruti Toyota JV. In its recent form, this engine is capable of making 103BHP and 138Nm. There are also a few other options for consideration. As per the recent report, Maruti Suzuki is about to launch an all-new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine for its upcoming mid-sized SUV. Maruti Suzuki can also bring in the 138 BHP 1.4-litre Boosterjet engine.
