Maruti Vitara Brezza Diesel to RELAUNCH With Bigger, More Powerful Engine

It is widely known fact that the largest car manufacturer in India, Maruti Suzuki, has put an end to its entire diesel engine prior to the implementation of BSVI emission standard. The Indo-Japanese car manufacturer cited the high cost of upgrading diesel engines to BSVI avatar as the main reason for the discontinuation of its diesel models. Following Maruti Suzuki, other carmakers like Skoda and Volkswagen have also stopped their diesel-powered models. Despite all the past announcement, it is reported that Maruti Suzuki is rethinking about diesel engine production and might bring back the oil-burner-equipped variants of the Maruti Vitara Brezza and Maruti XL6. 

According to the reports, it is confirmed by a source from the company that they will bring back the 1.5-litre diesel engine under BSVI form by the end of next year. In fact, Maruti Suzuki was quite open about the possibility of relaunching diesel models if the demand for diesel cars is sufficient. From what we observe in the current market, the diesel vehicles are still claiming a good share of the market sales despite the discontinuation of various diesel models.

While Maruti Suzuki as the largest car manufacturer has dropped out of the diesel segment, other major car brands like Hyundai, Kia, Tata and Mahindra still keep going and gain considerable sales thanks to their diesel line-up. Even though Maruti Suzuki is still doing well with its petrol range, there is still certain discomfort seeing others’ gain out of its absence.

Rumours suggest that Maruti Suzuki will bring back the in-house developed 1.5-litre diesel engine under the BSVI guise. The details of this BSVI version are not revealed yet. However, it is expected that this engine will continue to generate a maximum power of 95BHP and a maximum torque of 225Nm, similar to the BSVI version. About the transmission option, this engine will be available with the 6-speed manual gearbox.

In the BSIV guise, this engine powered the Maruti Ertiga and Maruti Ciaz. Since Maruti Ertiga has been spotted during testing for a while now, it is expected that the diesel engine will make its comeback on this MPV first. Afterwards, it is likely to be offered on the Maruti Vitara Brezza and the S Cross, both of which were once the diesel-only models. If the diesel engine returns to these model line-up, Maruti Suzuki will be able to regain its loyal fans. However, it should be noted that the diesel Maruti Suzuki models will be expensive than the existing petrol counterparts. It is expected that the price gap between petrol and diesel version is around 1.4 lakh.
