Maruti Vitara Brezza will be available with a petrol engine for the first time since August this year.

The BSVI emission norm will soon cast a shadow over the current diesel vehicle market. The new stringent emission standards will require manufacturers to make extensive engine upgrade to their diesel models, which will be so expensive that it will outweigh the sale potential. As a result, many car manufacturers have decided to pull the plug on some of their diesel-powered models. Maruti, whose 30 per cent of sales come from the diesel segment, is also set to discontinue a wide range of diesel models.

From August, Maruti Vitara Brezza will no longer be powered by diesel engine

Maruti Brezza, the main staple of Maruti’s diesel range, will also have to part with their 1.3-litre diesel engine and welcome new powertrains. The Brezza, which is a diesel-only model, will get a petrol engine as well as a cleaner diesel engine. Both these units will be the 1.5-litre motors that power the Ciaz sedan.

At first, Maruti was considering the K10C 1.0-litre BoosterJet petrol engine (101PS and 150Nm) for the upcoming petrol variant of the Brezza. However, due to the high cost of production and its poor fuel efficiency, this engine adoption seems to have been ruled out. Another potential candidate is the Baleno’s 1.2-litre Dual Jet engine with a maximum power output of 90 Nm and 113 Nm.

Maruti Brezza is likely to come with the K15B 1.5-litre petrol engine powering the Ciaz and new Ertiga

It is most likely that Maruti Vitara Brezza petrol version will receive power from a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Powering the facelifted Maruti Ciaz and the new Ertiga, this petrol motor is capable of churning out the maximum power of 104.69 PS as well as the peak torque of 138 Nm. In addition to the main petrol engine, the powertrain system will also receive support from a new Progressive Smart Dual Battery hybrid system. It is expected to come with a 5-speed manual gearbox. An 4-speed automatic option might be available at the later stage.

Apart from the essential engine updates, Maruti Vitara Brezza will soon come with some feature enhancements. It is expected to see new side airbags, sunroof and new Smart Play and Smart Connect system on the petrol Brezza.
