Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) is working on expanding its line-up. The additions will mainly include cars with electric power from a hybrid or a EV powertrain. We expect the new cars to be introduced sometime around next year. In line with this strategy, the carmaker has been conducting road-tests of an electric Wagon R, which was last spotted on the streets of Gurgaon a few days before the entire country was ordered to stay home.

The latest spy media you see here is courtesy our regular reader, Vipul Choudhary. The car which was spotted recently was earlier being called the 'XL5' - a rumoured premium version of the Wagon R. However, it's actually an EV based on the company's hot-selling tallboy. As per sources, initially, this car would be available only to fleet operators, similar to what Tata did with the Tigor EV. Private ownership of the vehicle might not be possible until we have better electric vehicle infrastructure in place.

The test car spied here wears a full-body camouflage, primarily because there are some drastic changes to the styling package as compared to the regular Wagon R. Firstly, we'll have a split headlamp design, much like many modern SUVs. The front grille design is also different, and even the bumpers and foglamp housings are new. At the rear, the car will sport LED fixtures in the X-mas-style tail lamp clusters. The 15-inch alloy wheels on this test mule come are same in design as those of the Maruti Ignis.

Nothing is known about the specifications of the car at the moment. In other news, Maruti Suzuki was also spied testing the Suzuki Solio Bandit hybrid recently. The car is expected to have been brought to India for component testing, mainly the hybrid powertrain, for use in the Suzuki Swift hybrid. The Swift hybrid, which delivers a claimed fuel economy of 32 kmpl, can be Maruti’s trump card after the discontinuation of diesel engines from the company arsenal.
