Maruti WagonR is confirmed to go on sale in 2020 via NEXA showrooms.

Last year, Maruti introduced the prototype car for the new WagonR electric at MOVE Global Mobility Summit. Maruti's first electric model is scheduled to launch next year. The electric WagonR will be the stepping stone for Maruti’s long term plan for electric vehicle production. Ahead of its launch, the WagonR EV was spotted undergoing road test for a couple of times. As revealed recently, the electric WagonR will be retailed via its premium outlet branch NEXA.

Launched in 2014, NEXA showrooms are meant to provide a premium experience for the customers, which differentiates themselves from the regular Arena dealerships. For the time being, Maruti has established around 250 dealerships across the countries. Maruti is planning to expand the number of Nexa dealership to 300 by the end of this year and to 400 next year. Currently, Nexa is responsible for delivering some high-range models, including Maruti Ciaz, Baleno, S-Cross and Ignis.

To prepare for the new electric Maruti WagonR, Maruti also announced their plan for a new manufacturing facility for lithium-ion battery production which will go into operation from 2020. Besides supplying batteries for its own product range, this plant is expected to provide for other carmakers too. Apart from the launch of the first all-electric Maruti WagonR, Maruti will also carry out other projects regarding electric vehicle segment with support from its partner Toyota. In return, Maruti will provide Toyota with its models for rebadging. Recently, Toyota has launched the Baleno-rebadged Toyota Glanza as the first vehicle from this long-term partnership.

The regular Maruti WagonR is currently available through Athena dealership along with other entry-level vehicles like Alto, Baleno, Swift, Celerio and Swift. This small hatchback has significantly contributed to Maruti’s overall sales. In regards to its popularity, Maruti chose the WagonR to be the first car from its range to go electric. Retailing the electric WagonR via Nexa also means that this EV will come at a premium price as well as a premium package. It is expected that WagonR EV will be priced at around 10 lakh. More specs about the new WagonR will be revealed as the launch day approaches.
