Mercedes-Benz GLB concept unveiled at 2019 Shanghai Auto Show

The new Mercedes-Benz GLB concept is a pre-cursor to a rugged-looking new SUV that will be slotted between the GLA and the GLC

The German luxury carmaker, Mercedes-Benz has revealed the G-class inspired mini SUV at this year's Shanghai Auto Show. Dubbed, the Mercedes-Benz GLB concept, the new model gets a muscular and boxy design, which signifies the rugged nature of the car. The production-spec Mercedes-Benz GLB will rub its shoulders with the likes of Audi Q3, Volvo XC40 and BMW X1.

Mercedes-Benz GLB concept has made its world debut at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show.

On the outside, the GLB concept employs Mercedes' signature grill which gets vertical looking slats and Mercedes logo up front. The illumination duties are done by projector headlamps with LED DRL and fog lamps along with LED lights mounted on the roof of the SUV. The massive-looking rubber tyres and blacked-out wheel arches will help this mini SUV to go beyond its limits. Completing the overall picture with a smart looking rear, which gets a massive looking tailgate, a sporty looking spoiler with integrated stop light and LED taillights. The Mercedes-Benz GLB concept will sit between the upcoming GLA and newly introduced GLC facelift. The said vehicle is 4634 mm long, 1890 mm wide and has a wheelbase of 2829 mm.

The Mercedes-Benz GLB concept has a plush looking interior. The luxurious cabin is a combination of Nappa and nubuck leathers, which are equipped on the seats, dashboard, centre console and door panels. Infotainment needs are handled by a touchscreen infotainment system. A driver can easily access the infotainment console with the help of steering mounted controls. Moreover, the SUV also features

a fully TFT digital display, which provides all the crucial information regarding the vehicle. It is expected that the SUV will come in 5-seater arrangement and 7-seater arrangement as optional.

Mercedes-Benz GLB Concept is designed to have some characteristics of an off-roader

Mechanically, the Mercedes-Benz GLB concept is powered by an M264 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine, which churns out respective power and torque outputs of 224hp and 350Nm. The 2.0-litre petrol engine will power the top-spec GLB250. The SUV also gets a much powerful M264, diesel unit that produces 306hp of power and 400 Nm of peak torque. The diesel unit will power the AMG-badged GLB 35. The engine will send power to the wheels through an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and a multi-plate clutch 4Matic four-wheel-drive system. The terrain management will be executed with the help of different driving modes Eco, Sport and Comfort.

There's no sign for the Mercedes-Benz GLB to get launched in India anytime soon. The India spec Mercedes-Benz GLB will feature a 2.0-litre diesel mill, which is expected to be offered in two states of tune that will produce 150 hp and 190 hp of respective power. The German automaker is also planning to introduce a plug-in hybrid variant of the GLB which can cover a distance of 65 to 70 km at a time. Expected prices for the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLB are Rs 40 lakh.
