Mercedes-Benz has confirmed the launch of an affordable variant of the G-Class SUV. It will be powered by a 3-litre diesel engine.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, or G-Wagen as it is popularly called, is one of the most iconic luxury off-road vehicles of all time. Sadly, its sales figures in India have been underwhelming and this is becaugse the only model available in India is the AMG G63, which is the performance version of the “normal” G-class SUV. That, however, is set to change soon as Mercedes-Benz has confirmed the launch of an affordable diesel variant of the G-Wagen.

The G350d is set for launch on October 16th. With the launch of the non-AMG variant, the G-Wagen will be relatively more affordable to buyers due to its significantly lower price tag. Also, being a diesel-powered car, the running costs will also be lower due to better fuel economy.

The G350d will feature a 3.0-litre inline-six diesel engine, which produces 283bhp and a massive 600Nm of peak power and torque respectively. Transmission duties will be handled by a 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission. Keeping true to its roots, the G-Class diesel will sport Mercedes’ 4Matic AWD system, which is capable of sending 40% of the power to the front axle and 60% to the rear axle. Performance isn’t bad either, with 0-100 Km/h run taking a mere 7.4 seconds.

Another impressive detail about the G350d is that its engine is Euro-VI compliant, which theoretically means it is also BSVI compliant. Currently, the G-Class SUV is only available in the AMG G63 trim, which is priced at ₹2.19 crore (ex-showroom). The G350d’s price is expected to be at a little more than half that price, ₹1.30 crore (ex-showroom, expected). The G-Wagen diesel does not have any competition in the Indian market, although price-wise, you could consider the Porsche Cayenne and Toyota Land Cruiser as its rivals.
