Mercedes-Benz does not regard India as a market with favourable conditions for EVs' development. This is because of a deficiency in clear policies and impetus for EVs sales in the country.

According to the German car producer, the import taxes on CBUs is often extremely high, which leads to the fact that EVs is far less competitive than ones with internal combustion engines.

Mercedes-Benz India Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Michael Jopp told PTI that a clear electric policy which summarizes the long-standing perspective, framework and limits would be a strong motivation for the company to introduce EVs into the Indian auto market. Otherwise, at present, the company sees no potentialities for EVs in the Indian auto market.

With no clear policies and reduction on EVs importing taxes, Mercedes-Benz India has no intention of launching EV in India

Mercedes is planning to spread its EVs globally. However, in order to make the Indian auto market more potential for EVs, the government should reduce the taxes on EVs imported as CBUs which are operated by batteries; thereby helping the competitiveness of Mercedes-Benz with other local battery-producing brands increase. This, according to Jobb, can help expand the EVs segment as well as charging stations in India more quickly.

Although Mercedes is going to spread its EVs in the global market, it still hesitates to launch EVs in India

Beside EVs, the company will continue to invest in vehicles with internal combustion engines since it will offer customers more options and there is still a long-term interest in such vehicles all over the world. Jobb stated that:

“We also see an ongoing relevance of combustion engines so that from our perspective for all markets, including India it is important to offer choices to customers. That is why we will keep investing in diesel engines because that is a clear preference (of customers),”

So, by now, unless the Indian government develops a clear policy and diminishes the importing taxes on EVs, the German luxury car maker has no intention of launching EVs in India. Instead, it will try to maintain its top position in the luxury car segmentation.
