Thanks to government's more relaxing norms on imported vehicles, Mercedes plans to assemble more cars in India market.

Mercedes Benz is the global car brand that produces a wide range of hot-selling premium vehicles. Many of them are introduced in the Indian market and attracts a cult following among many Indian customers. And in the future, it is possible that the Mercedes-Benz will get their products to be highly localized with more units to be assembled locally.

It is the result of the government’s decision to relax the regulation on imported vehicles. According to the new norms, on average, carmakers are allowed to import 2,500 units into India each year regardless they are homologated or not. It will make it easy for car manufacturers to deliver their products to the India market. The process will take less consideration and effort, therefore, the localization process will not be so hard on international car brand.

The new norms have invited the German carmaker to make a move to extend their production line in India. Martin Schwenk, MD & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, said:

"The rule can be an entryway for local assembly, eventually. We can bring models with limited efforts (investment) and see how the market responds. In principal, it’s an opportunity to explore the market with reduced efforts and I’m very confident that this is a good model to help us to explore other opportunities as well."

At the moment, Mercedes’s latest launch of the V-Class has been benefited from the new import vehicles norms. As the result, the carmaker could shorten the launching process. Even though the vehicles don’t have to be homologated to be launched, it does need to meet all the standards, including EEC, ECE and all the Japanese and international standard.
