MG Motor India plans to launch the eZS EV as its second product in India. Another affordable electric model is also planned for India launch.

At the moment, MG Motor is all for the launch of its first vehicle in India, the MG Hector. After the MG Hector, the British carmaker will enter the electric vehicle segment with the MG eZS. MG Motor’s affair with EVs will be extended with the second EV launch. Unlike the premium MG eZS, the second EV will be priced under Rs 10 lakh, which means that it will come across as a fairly affordable model.

With this under-10-lakh EV, MG Motor is aiming at the majority of the car buyers after approaching the high-end market with the eZS. By doing this, MG could expand their band of customers. This pricing strategy is hoped to be effective in India market.

MG Motor set high hope for the premium segment. Yesterday, MG has held a press event in which they showcased the highly-advanced and cutting-edging connectivity features. These techs will make an appearance on the upcoming Hector. Reportedly, the Hector will host a 10-inch portrait touchscreen packed with an array of functions.

Moreover, the powertrain ranges also include one petrol-mild hybrid option. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is paired with a 48 V mild hybrid powertrain. Compared with the conventional engine, the mild hybrid setting helps to boost up the fuel mileage by 12 per cent. On top of that, the 48V mild hybrid system offered on the Hector is the most affordable in the market.

Also at the event, the intention for a second EV is also confirmed. According to Rajeev Chhaba, MG’s Managing Director for India, MG is working on the second EVs for India market. Equipped with fast charging technology, the eZS could charge 80 per cent of the battery pack within 30 minutes. MG  eZS is confirmed to get the range of about 430km for one single charge.

The eZS EV SUV will follow the first launch of the Hector in May, possibly arriving by the end of 2020.  MG Motor expected to localise this model soon, but initially, the eZS will be imported to India via CBU (Completely Built Up) route. To keep the price in check, it is important to localise battery and other components heavily. This is expected to be the solution to the pricing of the affordable second EV, which is a clear advantage for MG in the EV race. Also, it is worth to remember that SAIC owns nearly half of the battery plant in China, the world’s leading country for producing batteries. By now, the timeline of the second EV is not confirmed yet.
