In a recent interview, MG Motors has revealed that the MG Gloster will cost almost twice of Toyota Fortuner. Read ahead to know more.

Update- As per a recent communication with MG officials, the MG Gloster should be viewed as a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Jeep Grand Cherokee rival and not as an alternative to the Fortuner. It needs to be mentioned here that while the renowned SUV from Toyota has a starting price of Rs 92.60 lakh (ex-shworoom), the flagship SUV from FCA starts at Rs 78.88 lakh (ex-showroom). This makes the Gloster a much affordable alternative to the aforementioned premium offerings.

Original post- MG Gloster was recently showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 and is expected to be launched around Diwali this year. With its introduction, the large-size SUV will become the flagship product in the carmaker's portfolio.

While the exact prices will be revealed only at the time of the actual launch of the vehicle, it has recently been stated in an interview by the President and MD of MG Motors India that the vehicle will cost around the Rs.50 lakh mark. This is in stark contrast of the belief that the Gloster woudl rival the Toyota Fortuner. For reference, the base variant of the Fortuner costs around Rs. 27.32 lakh.

“With Gloster, we are trying to bring an INR 80-90 lakh product to the market at around Rs 50 lakh and plan to launch it during Diwali this year. Gloster will be a low-volume game. To keep reinforcing the brand and show technological prowess we will drive in new products here. The volume should be around 5,000-6,000 annually.”

- Rajeev Chaba, President & MD, MG Motors India

While this isn’t a solid confirmation, it can be safely assumed that the MG Gloster will be positioned a segment, or even two, above the Fortuner. The Gloster is also significantly larger than the Fortuner, which will help differentiate their segments easily. The upcoming MG SUV has quite generous dimensions; it has a length of 5,005 mm, a width of 1,932 mm, a height of 1,875 mm, and a wheelbase length of 2,950 mm.

Specifications of the MG Gloster aren't available at this point of time. It is being said that the Gloster could come with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine. The petrol motor produces 224 PS and 360 Nm, while the diesel mill generates 217PS and 480Nm. In all likelihood, an optional 4WD system will be also on offer.

In China, where this SUV is sold as the Maxus D90, it comes with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine. The former produces peak power and peak torque of 224PS and 360Nm respectively, while the latter generates 217PS and 480Nm. There are two transmission options on offer: a 6-speed manual and an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The diesel variant also offers a 4-wheel-drive system as optional.
