MG Hector is taking “a flying leap” to its debut on May this year. The first-ever MG Motor SUV is expected to rival the likes of Tata Harrier and Jeep Compass in the compact SUV segment.

In an exclusive statement at the dealer meeting held recently, MG Motor India revealed that the series production of its brand new Hector SUV had begun ahead of schedule. The production-ready version was not on display during the press conference albeit, we have already got in hand a batch of leaked images fully divulging the inside-out aesthetic of the model ahead of its commercial launch.

Series production of MG India's first SUV, MG Hector, has started ahead of schedule.

According to the SAIC-owned automotive company, around 50 dealers and 120 touchpoints will be commenced as the first part of MG Motor’s domestic operation campaign before expanding further. The series production of the Baojun 530-based SUV has been already started on April 20. Since sharing as many as aesthetic elements with its global sibling, the MG Hector will come out with an ultra-impressive bold stance, courtesy of a large hexagonal chrome-accentuated grille up front that houses a central-placed silver MG’s badge. A set of dual-split headlamps comes as distinctive as it does in Hector’s front fascia while the lower front bumper accommodates a chunky air dam and the turn indicators setup is placed on top, rolling out a completely pleasing vista on the car’s overall exterior.

The side angle witnesses the presence of multi-spoke machine-cut alloys with squared wheel arches, together with a sporty-looking sharp lower door rim. The rear fascia, on the other hand, shares the same premium quotient as the front-end with a horizontal LED taillight setup, roof-mounted spoiler, shark fin antenna and single exhaust.

MG Hector launch is confirmed to take place in May 2019.

Two engine options are underway to come alongside the MG Hector’s bonnet including a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel model. The gasoline burner, as in the Baojun 530 brother, can make 143 hp of power and 250 Nm of torque, meanwhile, the oil burner should come to produce 173 hp of max power and 350 Nm of peak torque. Transmission choices comprise a 6-speed MT and 6-speed dual-clutch AT (for the petrol variant) along with a 6-speed MT (for diesel version). Further, a 48V mild hybrid system which is available for the petrol engine model only delivers an additional torque of 20 Nm to the total output and is approximately 12 per cent more efficient in the running costs than the standard version.
