MG Hector is one of the most popular cars in India right now, and the company has confirmed that the SUV will be receiving a new 2.0-litre diesel engine. This diesel unit is developed by SAIC, MG’s mother company.

MG Hector was launched on June 27, 2019, and has since enjoyed massive popularity in India. Currently, the Hector is offered with three engine options, including two petrol engines and one diesel unit. It has now been confirmed that a new 2.0-litre diesel engine, developed by SAIC, will make its way to the MG Hector. This engine has made its international debut in Maxus D90 Pro last month.

As mentioned above, the MG Hector is currently available with three engine offerings. The petrol variant derives power from a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit which can generate a top power of 143PS and a maximum torque of 250Nm. This engine can come with a 48V mild-hybrid system. The diesel engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel unit that develops a maximum power of 217PS and 480Nm of peak torque. While the former is developed in house by SAIC, the diesel engine is sourced from FCA. MG has planned to replace the outsourced unit in the next upgrade for the MG Hector. In place of this engine, the newly-developed 2.0-litre diesel is likely to enter MG Hector’s engine line-up. The suspected engine is capable of making around 217PS of power and 480Nm of torque. In the Maxus D90 Pro, this engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Before heading for the MG Hector, this engine will come available at the MG-rebadged Maxus D90 first. The upcoming SUV is due to make its debut in 2021. This Toyota-Fortuner-rivalling SUV is likely to be priced from Rs 30-35 lakh. For the MG Hector, the 2.0-litre diesel engine is unlikely to come before that date. It is expected to arrive along with the facelift version. Since the launch date of this engine on the MG Hector is one year before RDE emission norms come into effect, it is likely that this engine will be made in accordance with the new norms.
