Two test mules of the MG Hector SUV have been spied testing in Himachal Pradesh. MG Motor India has confirmed that its first vehicle will be launched sometime between May and August this year.

The MG Hector is a rebadged version of the Baojun 530, manufactured by the tripartite Chinese joint venture SAIC-GM-Wuling. According to MG Motor, the SUV has been named after Prince Hector of Troy, and its name has also been inspired by the Trojan, warrior hero. It also takes the inspiration from the Royal Hector biplane used by the Royal Air Force during the 1930s and represents the necessary qualities of a vehicle such as “Strong, Bold, Trustworthy and Dependable”.

Unlike the Baojun 530, which offers two versions: five-seater and seven-seater one, once launched in India, the MG Hector will be available with only a five-seater version. However, it is reported that the seven-seater and eight-seater versions are being developed and will be ready to be introduced soon. Under the hood of the Hector SUV will be a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.0L turbocharged diesel unit, both of which will be made compliant with the BSVI norms ahead before this set of standards take effect.
