MG Hector will offer a mild hybrid system with its petrol engine. With hybrid technology, the Hector could offer better fuel mileage and smoother performance.

MG Motor is busy preparing for the launch of its first vehicle in the India market. Even though the details of the MG Hector SUV are kept unveiled, promo pictures have unfolded the overall appearance of the production MG Hector. To create an edge for the Hector over other competitors, MG Motor promised to bring in a load of premium features, some of which would be first in the segment. MG Motor also confirmed that the Hector would come with a mild hybrid system alongside its petrol engine, making it the first SUV in India to feature hybrid technology.

The mild hybrid won't be provided across the petrol range. Instead, MG Motor will offer one petrol-hybrid powertrain option aside from the petrol and diesel engine option. The Hector will make use of a 48V mild hybrid system that will be paired with a 1.5-litre 143PS turbocharged petrol engine. The petrol engine alone could churn out the peak power of 143bhp while the torque is boosted up by 20Nm that could help to eradicate the turbo lag at low speed and smooth the acceleration at city traffic.

Also with the mild hybrid system, the Hector could gain energy from regenerative braking for the battery, which could help to save energy for kicking off the electric motor. On the other hand, an automatic engine stop-start system will also be offered. This function could save fuel by turning off the engine when it’s at idle. The mild hybrid is expected to raise the mileage of the Hector by 12 per cent compared with the standard petrol engine. Its fuel efficiency might be on par with the diesel variants.

Moreover, the mild hybrid powertrain comes with a more affordable price than the upgraded BSVI-compliant diesel engine. Plus, the high fuel efficiency that the hybrid system could bring will allow the MG Hector to meet the stringent Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms.

Besides the petrol engine, MG Hector also offers a 2.0-litre Multijet Diesel engine that is currently available on the Jeep Compass and the Tata Harrier. This engine produces a maximum of 170 bhp for the Compass and 140 bhp on the Harrier, but it is still unclear how much power this engine could provide for the Hector. After the Hector, MG Motor is expected to launch an all-electric SUV.
