The MG Motors is all set to enter the Indian market in 2019. As expected, the British brand has already confirmed to release its second vehicle- the fully electric SUV in India next year.

MG Motors is a British automotive company located in Birmingham, UK and a subsidiary of SAIC Motor. While the Chinese-owned British carmaker has announced its entry to the Indian auto space by the first model coming in the second quarter of 2019, the company also confirmed its second product to reach our shores by 2020. Although there is no exact information about the launch date, MG Motor reveals that the EV will see its public debut within one year after the first launch.

With this first MG motor’s all-electric SUV, the automotive company is believed to be one of the pioneers of the EV category in India. The carmaker will carry out the designatory and mechanical works for the electric sports utility vehicle in the UK and China with the support from Indian engineers. However, the electric SUV will be heavily localized at Halol, Gujarat plant in India so that it can comply with the global standard as well as suit the driving conditions and the Indian roads.

There is currently no electric vehicle in MG products lineup. The China-spec eRX5, another SAIC brand launched in 2017, was powered by 48.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that can go for a distance of about 400km and generate 115bhp of power and 255 Nm of torque. The MG’s first EV is expected to have a portion of technology with its sibling, the eRX5.

Speaking to the Media, Mr Michael Yang, the Executive Director of International Business and President of SAIC Motor International Company said:

“MG will launch a globally-competitive pure-electric SUV in India, to make our contribution to India’s energy and environmental strategies. The pure electric SUV will be a breakthrough chapter in the EV space in India, being one of its kind in the market. This is an addition to the first SUV which we plan to launch in the second quarter of next year”

The fully electric SUV from MG Motor will become a bitter rival of Hyundai Kona Electric at the same time.
