Mitsubishi is developing the Outlander PHEV, which is expected to be launched in India soon

1. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Engine

The most considerable change of the Outlander PHEV in comparison with the normal variants is the engine. Therefore, unlike most of the other previous articles, this one will deal with the plug-in hybrid engine of this SUV first.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will be powered by a hybrid engine which is a combination of a 2.0L 4-cylinder petrol motor and two electric motors. While the petrol motor can deliver a max power of 118bhp and a peak torque of 186Nm, each of the electric ones is good for 82bhp, which means that the SUV can generate a total power output of up to 203bhp from the plug-in hybrid engine.

Thanks to the plug-in hybrid motor, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is able to produce a great power output

The two electric engines are separated from each other, one on the front axle and the other on the rear axle of the vehicle. They get the power from a 12kW lithium-ion-battery pack which can be fully charged in 6.5 hours. When the fast-charging option is adopted, 80% of the battery can be fully charged in only 30 minutes.

There will be three driving modes available in the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: All Electric, Series Hybrid and Parallel Hybrid. In the All-Electric mode, only the electric motors provide power for the SUV. Its claimed maximum speed is 120kmph with a travel range of 50km per charge. In the All-Electric mode, only the electric motors provide power for the SUV. The series hybrid mode equally uses the petrol and the electric motors at the same time. On the other hand, in the Parallel Hybrid, the SUV uses mostly the petrol motor with the assistance of the electric motors. The claimed fuel efficiency of the Outlander PHEV is 58kmpl.

2. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Exterior

The exterior will witness some tweaks against the regular Outlander. In the front, the Outlander PHEV is expected to get a redesigned grille, an updated bumper and restyled auto headlights. On the side profile, it will be equipped with an electric sunroof and dual-paint 18-inch wheels. The rear will come with a tweaked bumper, a new spoiler and an upgraded tail lamps.

3. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Interior

Besides the improvement in the motor, the Outlander PHEV can also be set apart from the other regular Outlander variants in terms of its interior. Its five-seating layout is going to replace the 7-seating one in the normal variants because there needs to be space to store the electric motor and the battery pack. The PHEV variant will be around 260kg heavier than the normal variants. The fuel tank will also be narrowed by 15 litres.

The expected interior feature list consists of

  • 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system

  • Rockford Fosgate sound system

  • Leather seats

  • Two-zone temperature control

The safety features will include

  • 7 airbags

  • Hill hold control

  • Electronic stability control

This wide range of interior features will ensure the passengers a comfortable, pleasant and safe travelling experience

4. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Price and Competition

Mitsubishi is already working on the PHEV variant of the Mitsubishi Outlander and it is expected to be launched in the Indian auto market in the coming time. Once launched in India, it is likely to be priced above Rs 35 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price, the Outlander PHEV will not have any direct rivalry in India. Its closest rival, the Volvo S90 T8 has a far higher price tag of Rs 1.28 crore (ex-showroom, India).
