Following the Citroen C5 Aircross and a compact SUV, an all-new mid-size SUV from Citroen that will rival the likes of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos will be launched in India by 2022.

As said in our earlier reports, Citroen will begin its operation in India from 2020 with the first car going to be the Citroen C5 Aircross. Besides, the French carmaker has also drawn up long-term plans for India beyond 2020 with a compact SUV set to launch a year later. Recently, various reports hint that the third model in Citroen’s lineup for our market will be a mid-size SUV will be launched in 2022 and set to lock horns with the current segment-leading Hyundai Creta and the upcoming Kia Seltos.

Citroen will make its first step into India with the C5 Aircross in 2020.

Citroen’s Hyundai Creta-rivalling SUV is already in the works. According to some recent reports, this new mid-size SUV should be developed on the international-spec Citroen C4 Cactus sibling but will get some specific features to stay in line with other India-spec products. Like the two earlier SUVs, the third Citroen SUV will be heavily localised to keep the costs in check and specially built to suit the Indian buyers' tastes and preference. The company’s signature quirky design language on the outside and inside will be retained as well.

Details of the powertrains are yet to confirm but we can expect the same engine packages, albeit for a higher state of tune, as in the Citroen’s compact SUV. It is likely to use a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel unit under the bonnet along with the possibility of some hybridization, which would, anyway, have to meet the new real-driving emission tests set to come into force in 2023. Apart from the Hyundai Creta, the new Citroen SUV will join the competition with some new upcoming models like the Kia Seltos as well as the Tata Blackbird by the time it goes on sale in India.
