The new-generation Hyundai Creta has managed to outsell all the cars in the Indian car market during May 2020, making it the current best-seller.

According to the sales figures of the Indian auto market in May 2020, the new generation Hyundai Creta is currently the best-selling vehicle in our country. Hyundai Motor India Limited managed to ship 3,212 units of the new model to its dealerships last month, which is more than the sales volume of the previous best-sellers like Maruti Alto, Swift, Dzire and Baleno.

The new 2020 Hyundai Creta is followed by Maruti Ertiga, which sold 2,353 units in May 2020 to gain the second place in the sales chart. Maruti Dzire, the best selling sedan in the country, managed to gain the third place by selling 2,215 units. At the fourth place is the Mahindra Bolero, which sold 1,715 units, while Maruti Eeco secures the fifth spot with 1,617 units. Except for the Dzire, all the vehicles in the top five bestsellers list are a surprise. It is also interesting to note that three of these vehicles are UVs- the Ertiga, Bolero, and Eeco.

Although it is a proud moment for Hyundai, the victory might be short-lived. Due to the current lockdown, carmakers in India are struggling to sell vehicles. Although manufacturing facilities are now almost completely operational once again, sales are slow to pick up. As social distancing has become the new norm, people are avoiding car dealerships, thus making it harder for companies to be able to sell vehicles. Although online purchasing portals are slowly adding flexibility in the car buying process, it will need time to be as successful as offline car buying.

Also, market analysts had predicted that the demand for small and affordable hatchbacks, like Maruti Alto and Renault Kwid, is set to increase post lockdown. The usership of shared mobility is set to decline as people will slowly gravitate towards personal mobility. Datsun has also recently launched the new redi-GO facelift, which gives people another choice in the entry-level hatchback segment. As cab services, public transport, etc, do not allow for proper social norms to be followed, this might surely be the case. There is also expected to be a surge in the used car market, as budget-conscious buyers will be flocking there for a good deal.
