Shortly after its launch, the new-gen Thar has bagged over 25,000 bookings that lead to a soar in the waiting period. While some select high-spec variants of the new Thar are seeing exponential responses, the lower-spec variants are not seeing that much in demand. In this regards, Mahindra has now removed the entry-level AX variants of the Thar from the official website.

The discontinued AX variants of the Thar include the AX Standard petrol, the AX petrol and the AX diesel, which gets the prices of Rs 9.80 lakh, Rs 10.65 lakh and Rs 10.85 lakh, respectively (all prices, ex-showroom). From this, the base price of the 2020 Mahindra Thar has been jacked up to Rs 11.90 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The AX Optional becomes the most affordable variant in the Thar’s lineup now.

The entry-level AX variants of the Thar has witnessed such a comparatively low demand that the home-grown carmaker has decided to halt the production of those models in India, thereby clearing up the slots for the production of higher variants that are receiving great interests. As a result, the backlog of orders can be resolved and buyers of the higher-spec Thar can benefit from a reduced waiting period.

As revealed by Mahindra, the all-new Thar hardtop and automatic versions of both fuel types are in the highest demand now. Specifically, around 44% of the Thar buyers are going for the automatic variants that show us that the company is on the right path for the Thar’s success. Also, about 55% of the Thar’s customers are the first time Mahindra buyers, indicating the immense popularity of the second-gen Mahindra Thar in the Indian space.
