Next-gen Ford Mustang Could Get V8 Hybrid & AWD system

In view of Ford’s electrification rollout gathering good momentum, Ford is set to introduce an electrified variant of the Mustang in its new-gen avatar, joining Mustang Mach-E which is due to be launched later this year.

Ford Mustang has been a legendary supercar nameplate in the world for a long time now.

For the new-gen hybrid Mustang, the American auto giant is looked to hop on the success of the existing S550-generation model which is essentially the first Mustang sold and marketed in the global market. Internally called S650, the new-gen Ford Mustang was contemplated to go hybrid even some years back but the plan was shelved after Ford’s new CEO, Jim Hackett, decided to prioritise the development of Mustang Mach-E instead.

The new-gen Mustang is said to be equipped with an all-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain system.

Now that the Mach-E has been introduced and garnered quite a whole bunch of attention from the world’s enthusiasts, it’s time for the company to bring the new-gen electrified Mustang into production. Reports reveal that Ford will appease its loyal customers with the same V8 engine option but it will become more fuel-efficient with a hybrid system this time around.

If the original plan of the electrified Mustang in 2017 was kept alive, the all-new Ford Mustang will get a V8 engine delivering power to the rear wheels which is, in fact, a classic trait of Mustang moniker. The battery assistance is likely to appear in the form of two electric motors which might be “mounted directly to the opposing sides of the engine” to take care of the front wheels. Simply put, that means the Mustang will go with an all-wheel-drive setup featuring a traditional V8 at the rear and an electric-only front axle.

That said, it will be very interesting to see the Blue Oval to offer the new Mustang in its hybrid and all-wheel-drive form. Still, this is simply speculation and further details will be revealed at a later date.
