Next-Generation Mini Cooper Electric Caught Testing On Snow

Mini has recently announced that it plans to go fully electric by 2030, and the final internal combustion-engined vehicle will be launched in 2025. Today, we came across pictures of this test-mule of the next-generation Mini Cooper undergoing cold-weather testing. Being a test-mule, the vehicle has been wrapped in camouflage and has even added fake headlight rings, taillights and a hood to confuse onlookers. But the biggest giveaway is the ‘Electric Test Vehicle’ stickers on the outside, giving the clearest confirmation of the next-generation Mini’s electric powertrain.

The next-generation Mini is likely to retain a similar size to the outgoing model, and its design will be more of an evolutionary upgrade than a radical redesign. The interiors of the next-generation model may be the biggest change. BMW says that Mini will play a “pioneering role” in the electrification plans of the BMW Group. The German automaker is currently developing a new EV architecture and the next-generation Mini will be using this very platform. Interior shots of the camouflaged Mini reveals a large digital display that has replaced the Mini’s signature circular instrument housings. Mini’s current EV, the Cooper SE electric churns out 181 PS and 270 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. It is powered by a 32.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that offers a range of up to 234 km on the WLTP cycle.  The next-generation model which will use the new EV platform could come with improved output and range.

Mini has also recently revealed that it will not offer rear leather upholstery in the interior for its future models. The move is part of the automaker’s efforts in promoting sustainability as it moves on to the next generation of personal vehicles, and is a similar move to brands like Volvo’s Polestar. Reports also suggest that the upcoming Mini electric crossovers will be built in China from 2023 onwards via a joint venture with Great Wall.

Prices for the current-generation Mini Cooper range from Rs 35.10 lakh – Rs 46.90 lakh, ex-showroom. It is powered by a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine which makes 235 PS and 320 Nm of peak power and torque figures. Transmission choices are a 7-speed or 8-speed automatic.
