Nissan's upcoming Z-model to be aptly named 400Z. However, despite Nissan's usual naming norm, it gets a smaller displacement but a whole lot more power. Read on to know more.

A recent report suggests that Nissan's upcoming replacement for the 370Z will carry the 400Z name tag. Previous-generation Zs have been named based on engine displacement but this new version looks to be different. While it will no doubt get a 6-cylinder mill under the hood, it won't get a displacement of 4.0-litre. Instead, Nisssan has opted to plonk in a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged motor that will break an age-old tradition.

It all started with the Nissan 240Z and its 2.4-litre inline-6 motor, eventualy evolving into the the Nissan 370Z with a 3.7-litre V6. However, for its successor, the manufacture has chosen to move to forced-induction and naming the model after the amount of ponies it produces instead of the usual use engine displacement like previous-gen Zs.

The new sports car will derive power from a 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbocharged engine that has been sourced from the Infiniti Q60. Under the hood of the Q60, the engine produces a power output of 400bhp. All that power is then transferred to the road via a four-wheel-drive system, helping  the four-seat coupe to sprint from 0-100 kmph in just 5 seconds. On the other hand, the upcoming 400Z will be a rear-wheel-drive car and is expected to be a better performer because it’ll be significantly lighter than the 1,823kg Infiniti. The engine will come paired to either a manual or an automatic transmission.

However, the introduction of a new badge might be the only thing to tug at the heartstrings of Z purists. This is because prominent changes are expected to be made to the Nissan 400Z, be it inside or out. In terms of exterior design, the upcoming 400Z definitely features an edgier styling above the 370Z, which was starting to get criticized for its outdated styling. Inside, the carmaker will use high quality materials to enhance the upmarket feel of the car, and the dated touchscreen unit will be replaced by a modern infotainment system with advanced connectivity options. One can also expect the carmaker to offer a fully digital instrument cluster along with state-of-the-art advanced driver assistance technology. Once launched, it’ll rival with the likes of Toyota GR Supra and Alpine A110.
