The Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) has warned that all vehicles which are not powered by CNG in the Delhi-NCR region may be banned.

According to a press release, all the non-CNG vehicles in Delhi-NCR will be banned by the Environment Pollution Control Authority  (EPCA) unless air quality in the region improved. This ban can be applied for both commercial and private vehicles.

The EPCA Chairman has written to the chief secretary of Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, expressing his worry about the increased pollution there. In the letter, he wrote,

"If the current situation continues further and the air quality remains adversely impacted falling under the 'very poor' category, then according there is no other option but to direct for a complete stop on the use of private and commercial vehicles.Only those vehicles that drive using a CNG fuel will be allowed so that pollution level can be checked."

He also added that putting the ban into effect would be problematic as it is impossible to differentiate between cars that are powered by diesel and other fuels. Fortunately enough, CNG vehicles have fuel stickers on it and all public transport vehicles in India receive power from CNG. Only these two kinds of vehicles will be allowed to travel on the Delhi-NCR roads.

At the beginning of this month, the Supreme Court had put a ban on petrol-powered vehicles from 15 years old and diesel-powered ones from 10 years old upwards from travelling on the Delhi NCR streets.
