Only Tata Nexon Registers Positive Sales Growth In The Compact SUV Segment

The Indian auto industry has been experiencing a really hard time due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, for the past two months, there have been good signs of improvements in the sector since the sales volume has gradually improved. The upcoming festive season is expected to be a marvellous opportunity for sales sustainment and improvement. The compact SUV segment is becoming more and more popular and is expected to attract more customers in the foreseeable future. As a result, many activities in the segment have transpired recently. For example, the long-awaited Kia Sonet was launched several weeks ago; the Toyota Urban Cruiser has also considerably contributed to the total sales number. Other automakers like Renault and Nissan are also anticipated to launch their own SUVs in early 2021.

The sub-4-metre compact SUVs, with consistent sales in the past three months, have contributed a great deal to the overall sales. This segment recorded a sales number of 70,915 units from April to August 2020, which registered a 46.79% decline in comparison with 1,33,282 units in the same period last year.

The Hyundai Venue held the first position with 20,372 units sold in April - August 2020 as against 34,739 units last year, witnessing a 41.36 YoY degrowth. Next is the Maruti Vitara Brezza, the Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Ford EcoSport and Honda WR-V with a YoY increase of -52.6%, 4.09%, -59.3%, -58.07% and -67.61%, respectively. Noteworthily, the Tata Nexon is the only compact SUV which witnessed a positive sales expansion this FY.

The Tata Nexon is one of the most popular sub-4-metre compact SUV in India. The car receives its power from a 1.2-litre turbo gasoline burner with 120 PS against 170 Nm and a 1.5-litre turbo oil burner with 110 PS against 260 Nm. The transmission duties on both of the versions are undertaken by a 6-speed MT/AMT. The vehicle is equipped with a wide range of features including a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a digital instrument cluster, autocruise, automatic climate control, etc.
