A pair of Maruti WagonR EV test units have been recently spotted in Gurugram. The all-new electric hatchback is expected to hit the market by next year.

India’s biggest carmaker Maruti Suzuki is currently working on expanding its portfolio. The addition of new vehicles may include vehicles with an electric power plant. One can expect new Maruti products to hit the Indian shores somewhere around next year. In line with this strategy, the automaker has been conducting road-tests of the WagonR EV for a while now. Two test mules of the electric hatchback were recently spotted on the streets of Gurugram. The spy images you see here are courtesy of Bhanu Kaushik. Earlier, the electric hatchback was being called as XL5 and was rumoured to be the premium version of WagonR.

Initially, the electric hatchback will only be offered to the fleet operators

However, it is indeed an electric car based on the Maruti’s hot-selling tallboy. Reports suggest that initially, this car will be only available to the fleet operators (similar to what Tata did to Tigor EV). The WagonR EV will not be available for private consumers until we might have well-established vehicle infrastructure in the country.

The test mules spied recently were fully camouflaged, so one can expect the upcoming WagonR EV to a bit different from the regular hatchback that it is based on. Upfront, it could get a split headlamp design, similar to many modern SUVs. The styling of the front grille will also be quite distinctive, and even the bumper and fog lamp housings will be new.

The rear fascia of the electric hatchback will get LED fixtures in the X-mas-style tail lamp clusters. On the side, it will get 15-inch sporty looking alloy wheels that will be shared with the Maruti Ignis. It is expected to be sold through the company’s premium NEXA dealership network. The mechanical specs of the car are still undercover and are expected to be disclosed by the carmaker in the coming months. The regular Maruti WagonR is powered by a 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre gasoline engines. Transmission duties are done by a 5-speed MT and 5-speed AMT units.
