Petrol-sipping MG ZS Could Lock Horns with the Kia Seltos

The MS ZS EV is the second product offered by the carmaker into the Indian market and is a derivative of the MG ZS petrol. The MG ZS petrol is expected to hit the Indian market by next year. The carmaker imports the ZS EV from China to India as a CKD unit and assembles them at their Halol facility. MG has plans to follow the same strategy for the upcoming ZS petrol. Moreover, a recent report from Moneycontrol says that the carmaker has started looking out for component suppliers for ZS petrol. An industry source told the business publication that “MG Motor has floated a request for quotation (RFQ) for a petrol version of the ZS which it intends to bring to the market next year.”

The automaker has started sending RFQs into the market as an invitation to the producers to submit a price bid for the necessary components. Moreover, MG is also working to increase the localization level of the ZS EV. The carmaker showcased the ZS petrol at the 2020 Auto Expo. The SUV was first introduced back in November 2016 and got its facelift in September 2019. The Chinese-spec ZS petrol facelift derives power from a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol mill that produces power and torque outputs of 163 PS and 230 Nm.

The car also gets propelled by a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petro engine, which puts out 120 PS and 150 Nm of peak torque. The former comes coupled to a 5-speed MT and CVT, while the latter is being offered with a standard 6-speed AT. On the other hand, the new Thai-spec MG ZS petrol is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol unit which puts out 114 PS of power and 150 Nm of twisting force. In India-spec ZS petrol is expect the car to be priced between Rs 15-20 lakh (ex-showroom).
