The Renault Kwid-based MPV (RBC) test mule had been spotted several times in India, indicating some of its exterior features. But not until the newest spy images are published is the cabin the RBC disclosed.

Renault Kwid has recorded great success in the Indian hatchback section with an amber cabin and a stable performance. The French auto manufacturer is intending to introduce its MPV version, codenamed RBC to the Indian auto market, in the third quarter of next year. Here is what we have known about the Renault Kwid-based MPV (RBC) up to now. Read on to discover.

1. The Kwid-based MPV exterior will be based on its hatchback sister

The RBC will be underpinned by the modified version of the CMF-A platform of the Renault Kwid, called the ‘CMF-A+’, which translates into greater dimensions and a higher wheelbase. However, the overall design of the two cars is similar to each other. In the front, the RBC will get a chrome-surrounded radiator grille. On the side profile, the electrically adjusted body-coloured outside rear-view mirrors integrated with indicators, coloured door handles and the new kit of 15-inch alloy wheels will contribute to the dynamic look of the MPV. Coming to the rear, we can realize a wiper and washer, faux skid plates, roof-mounted stop lamps, new taillights, which will lend a rugged touch to the car.

2. The Kwid-based MPV cabin will be totally different from the regular Kwid hatchback

Although the test mules of the MPV had been spotted testing several times, revealing what it looks like outside, only recently is its interior disclosed through some spy images.

Interior features

According to the spy shots, the MPV will be available with a beige-and-grey interior paint scheme with silver ornamental elements, making it look totally different from the Kwid hatchback in terms of the interior. The MPV will be equipped with a three-spoke driving wheel with silver inserts. The leather-covered flat-bottomed driving wheel reminds us of the Nissan Kicks, projected to be launched in January 2019. Other expected interior features include

  • Two-tone dashboard with faux aluminium touches which gives the vehicle a luxurious feeling

  • 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which supports video, audio, navigation connectivity and is even integrated with the camera sensors in the rear

  • Newly-designed chrome-inserted instrument cluster and gear knob

  • Start push button

  • Bottle and cup holders

  • Air condition system with air vents in the rear seat row

Braking and safety features

The braking system of the Renault Kwid MPV will include front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. The expected safety features list includes standard front airbags (we can expect the top-spec variant to get 4 airbags), seatbelts, remote central locking, parking assist, pedestrian and vehicle protection system.

Space and seating

The seats of the MPV will also come with a dual-tone theme with fabric front seat upholstery. Being an MPV, the RBC is expected to be a seven-seater vehicle. However, the RBC is not expected to be available with an amber third seat row for adults. Similar to the Go+, the final seat row will be most appropriate for kids.

3. The Renault MPV will have only a petrol motor option

Engine and transmission

While we are quite sure that the MPV will get its power from only a petrol motor, it is still open to question whether it will be a 1.0L or a 1.2L unit. The AT version is expected to be available with Renault’s Easy-R AMT, which increases the likelihood that it will be powered by the 1.0L motor. The latest spy shots have confirmed that the power will be sent to the front wheels through both a manual and automatic gearbox. Renault has not revealed any other specific mechanical specifications of the upcoming MPV. We will inform you as soon as the French carmaker announces them. Stay tuned and get updated.

Mileage

The Renault Kwid MPV is expected to have a fuel efficiency of 25kmpl, but it can vary, depending on various factors such as the kerb weight of the vehicle, the conditions of the road, etc. On average, the mileage of the vehicle in the city and on the highway can be anticipated to be 20kmpl and 23kmpl, respectively.

Handling and riding quality

Thanks to the power driving system with smooth-operating controls and a sharp turning circle radius, the driver will feel more comfortable in long rides. The suspension setup will consist of front McPherson struts and rear twist beam suspension. The well-cushioned seats with roomy legroom and headroom can make sure that both of the driver and the co-passengers will have a comfortable travelling experience.

4. The RBC will have no direct rivals

The upcoming Renault MPV is scheduled to be launched in India in the third quarter of 2019 with a price range from Rs 5 lakh for the base variant to Rs 7.5 lakh for the top variant. With this price range, it will have no direct competitors but will be positioned between the facelifted Datsun Go Plus and the new Maruti Ertiga. For your information, the Datsun Go Plus costs between Rs 3.83 lakh to Rs 5.69 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi); the Ertiga has a price range from Rs 7.44 – 10.90 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The facelifted version of the Eritga has got a price hike in comparison with the outgoing model, which leaves a gap with the Datsun Go+ in which the upcoming MPV will fill.

Renault has yet found any real success in the Indian MPV segment. The Lodgy MPV, which has similar mechanicals with the Duster SUV, has witnessed stagnant sales in the country. Even the decline in its price does not seem to help improve its sales. This may have encouraged the French automaker to make a decision to further penetrate into the MPV segment but with a different step, a low-cost MPV. The RBC, with a more impressive performance, a more flexible interior which provides comfortable space for up to 7 passengers and such an aggressive price, has the potentialities to become a favourite MPV of Indian families.

The upcoming RBC is expected to become a popular MPV with the Indian auto buyers
