Renault India has just confirmed that because of the rise in input costs, its entry-level top-selling hatchback, the Renault Kwid, will be more expensive by up to 3% across its variants from next month.

Earlier, the Renault gave the Kwid a mid-life update with a wide range of additional safety features along with other feature alterations to help the vehicle adhere to the forthcoming Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program (BNVSAP) standards. Despite various feature updates, the Kwid did not experience any changes in its price. Currently, it is still priced in the range from INR 2.66 lakh for the base STD trim to INR 4.6 lakh for the top Climber one (all prices, ex-showroom, Delhi). At this price range, the Renault Kwid directly competes against the Maruti Alto and the Hyundai Santro.

Nevertheless, a 3% surge in price from next month would translate into a new price range for the Renault Kwid: INR 2.74 lakh - INR 4.72 lakh. However, it is unclear whether the French automaker will keep the price hike the same across all the variants or it will be varied.

As regards the 2019 Renault Kwid updated model, it is equipped with some additional standard safety features to comply with the new safety standards, including ABS with EVD, driver airbag, speed warning and seatbelt reminder for the driver and the front passenger. The top variants of the car are also equipped with a new 7-inch Touch screen MediaNAV Evolution which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity .

In terms of performance, the Renault Kwid is, at present, powered two petrol motor options. While the former is a 0.8L unit which can deliver a maximum power of 54 bhp and a peak torque of 72 Nm, the latter is a 1L one with 3 cylinders which is good for 68 bhp against 91 Nm. The 5-speed MT gearbox is available on both of the two engines, but the optional AMT unit is only mated to the bigger one. Renault is also intending to introduce the all-electric version of the Kwid hatchback by 2020.

Launched in India in 2015, the Kwid has been the best-selling model in Renault lineup in the country for quite some time. 2.75 lakh units of the vehicle have been sold in India and it is also exported to other countries as well. The Renault Kwid’s clearest advantages over the competitors are a masculine appearance, a reasonable price and an AMT gearbox.

The Kwid hatchback is assembled a Chennai-based Renault-Nissan joint manufacturing plant. It is underpinned by the same platform as the Datsun Redi-Go, which is sold by Nissan and slightly positioned below the Renault Kwid. The CMF-A platform will also support a low-cost MPV from Renault which will go on sale in India by mid-2019.
