Fiercely competed against by Maruti Celerio and Tata Tiago, the Renault Kwid’s sales declined by 28% in 2018 in comparison with 2017.

66,815 units of Renault Kwid were sold in 2018, dropping by 28% against 92,440 vehicles in 2017. The hatchback sold 5,832 units in December 2018, witnessing a 7.4% monthly growth but the total sales still experienced a decline as compared to the same period of 2017.

The French automaker has recorded a decline in the sales of its entry-level hatchback for quite a long time. The Kwid received a minor facelift last year without any change to the price, but this could not improve its monthly sales. In 2018, the average monthly sales of the Renault Kwid were 5,500 units.

Not until 2020 will the new-gen Kwid come to India; therefore, Renault is expected to launch more limited models to maintain the sales volume in the country. The current India-bound Kwid lacks structural strength, so the 2020 Renault Kwid is expected to be refined to comply with the strict safety standards.

An EV version of the Kwid for the Indian auto market is also being developed by Renault. It might go on sale in India after its launch in China in the coming time. The company is also working on a new MPV which will borrow the CMF-A platform from the Kwid. Considering such a price-conscious market like India, the French auto manufacturer is expected to aggressively price of the MPV by taking numerous of its components from the Kwid.

The current Renault Kwid is available with two petrol motor options. The base variants get the power from a 0.8L 3-cylinder DOHC motor which can deliver a max power of 54 hp at 5,678 rpm and a peak torque of 72 Nm at 4,386 rpm. The 1L petrol motor on the high-spec variants can produce 67 hp at 5,550 rpm against 91 Nm at 4,250 rpm. The transmission duties are undertaken by a standard 5-speed manual gearbox across all variants, and an optional AMT unit only mated to the 1.0L engine. The most recent update with a Traffic Assist option on the AMT variants helps the car move ahead in traffic conditions and prevents it from rolling back on slopes.
