Skoda has confirmed that their new SUV Karoq will enter the market around mid-2020. This model will be imported via the CBU route.

As a part of the "India 2.0 Project", Skoda will launch a slew of new cars in the Indian market in the upcoming years. Besides, Skoda will also put an effort into expanding the localization of their models. On the other hand, to venture into some niche segments in India, some models are planned to be imported via CKD (completely knocked down) and CBU (completely built unit) channel. The Skoda Karoq, for example, will be imported as a CBU. This model has been spotted undergoing road testing in India several times but it will not launch until the middle of the next year.

Thanks to the government’s new eased norms for importing CBU units, more foreign carmakers are encouraged to import their models which, previously, didn't make much sense for our market due to the high cost and complicated paperwork. Under the new norms, carmakers are allowed to import up to 2,500 units without homologation, which will allow them to keep the price in check, and hence, have a good shot at garnering a decent demand. After Karoq's launch in India, Skoda will consider the market response to this model to decide whether they should localize it or not. Other car brands will also take advantage of the new favourable initiative and import more new models to our market.

The Skoda Karoq will be the replacement of the Yeti. However, this model is dimensionally larger. The design will also be toned down, compared to its predecessor. The Karoq will slot under the Kodiaq. This SUV will feature the share its platform with other VW Group vehicles like Skoda Octavia, Super and Passat. In the international market, the SUV comes with five powertrain options, which comprise two petrol and three diesel engines. Two petrol engine options include a 1.0-litre TSI three-cylinder motor and a 1.5-litre TSI unit. The diesel range includes 1.6-litre engine, Kodiaq-sourced 2.0-litre unit and another 2.0-litre motor. The latter 2.0-litre oil burner gets the highest power output of 189 BHP. This engine comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox as standard while other engine options are mated to 6-speed manual gearbox.
