While it is the first time that an India-spec Skoda model gets a CNG kit, in the international market, Skoda and its mother company, Volkswagen, are known for having a wide range of CNG vehicles. On Volkswagen’s line-up, the CNG models are named TGI.
Skoda Rapid CNG is fitted with a 13.8 kg CNG tank that can run 368 km in one fill at the WLTP cycle. Moreover, a small petrol tank will be the back-up source of fuel in case the hatchback runs out of gas. It is reported that the new Skoda Rapid CNG will feature similar specifications to the Volkswagen Polo TGI.

As we all know, one of the biggest advantages of CNG vehicles is the lower level of carbon emission, which contributes to the environmental-friendly nature of this fuel type. What’s more, the running cost of a CNG vehicle is also significantly lower than that of a pure petrol-powered unit. For this reason, many people have opted for the CNG-fitted model. Since the CNG kit is now factory-fitted, customers won’t have to worry about safety and quality.
At the moment, India-spec Skoda Rapid is powered by one engine, a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. This engine is capable of making a top power of 110 PS and a maximum torque of 175 Nm. There are two transmission options, a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
Currently, Skoda Rapid is offered at the starting price of Rs 7.49 lakh (ex-showroom price) in India. The upcoming Skoda Rapid CNG will be more expensive than the petrol-powered variants. It is possible that after the launch of Skoda Rapid CNG, Volkswagen might offer CNG versions for the Vento as well. Skoda Rapid is rivalling against the Maruti Ciaz, Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Toyota Yaris.
