Suzuki Jimny is expected to arrive at India as a five-door model. The India-spec Jimny will be based on the Jimny Sierra.

In the current market, Mahindra Thar is the only offroader vehicle in India. This SUV easily wins over all customers of this segment. It is reported that Maruti Suzuki is considering launching offroad-capable Suzuki Jimny into the same segment. The enormous succeed of new-gen Mahindra Thar might have prompted Maruti Suzuki to go ahead with the launch of offroad Jimny.

Earlier this year, Maruti Suzuki has brought the Jimny to the Auto Expo 2020 to gauge Indian buyers’ responses. It is a well-known fact that 5-door version of Suzuki Jimny is considered for the Indian market. However, the launch details of this model are not revealed yet. In the meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki’s plant will manufacture 3-door Jimny model for export purpose.

As for Indian market, Maruti Suzuki might start importing the 5-door Jimny as Completely-Knocked-Down units sometime in 2021. Upon arriving at Indian shore, the five-door Jimny might undergo tremendous changes, which will take a while to complete. It is unlikely that India-spec 5-door will be launched by the end of 2022.

Reports also suggest that 5-door Jimny will be based on the global Jimny Sierra. If you don’t know, the Jimny Sierra is the bigger version of the standard Jimny. This model measure 3,550 mm long against 3,395mm on the standard Jimny. The standard Suzuki Jimny’s width and height stand at 1,475mm and 1,725mm, respectively, while Jimny Sierra is 1,645mm wide and 1,730mm tall.

It is expected that the Jimny Sierra with five doors will be even larger than its three-door counterpart. The length of the 5-door Jimny Sierra is expected to stand at 3.9 meters. Moreover, the wheelbase of the vehicle will also be extended from 2,250 mm to 2,500 mm for more interior space.

Under the hood, the Indian-spec Jimny Sierra might come with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine which can put out 103bhp and 138Nm. The same engine is also powering the Vitara Brezza, Ciaz and Ertiga. Mechanically, the Jimny Sierra is expected to come with part-time 4-wheel-drive system with low range. It is expected that Maruti Jimny will get both manual and automatic gearbox.
