After setting up the local production of the Suzuki Jimny, Maruti will likely sell the SUV in India as the new Gypsy from Nexa outlets.

In its 4th generation now, the Suzuki Jimny is a highly loved mini-SUV in all the markets it is sold in. It is currently manufactured in carmaker's Kosai-based production facility in Japan. The production is capped at 4,90,000 units annually, which is making it tough for the carmaker to fulfill the demands across the globe.

Thus, Suzuki is looking for another manufacturing hub where it can produce some more units of the Jimny to sell around the world. However, the Indian subsidiary of the manufacturer recently showcased the compact offroader at the 2020 Auto Expo to understand the market response towards the product. The Jimny was easy at pleasing crowds, but importing the car from Japan would make it expensive for potential customers to buy one.

Making some arithmetic calculation and reaching out to an algebraic mean, Suzuki has decided to set up a new production line for Jimny in India. The car will be manufactured at Suzuki’s Hansalpur unit in Gujrat. This move will bring down the cost of Jimny for the domestic market, while the manufacturer will also be able to cater to the international demand of the car. The manufacturer will focus on export demands initially. With a monthly production target of 4,000-5,000 units monthly, the carmaker will launch the car in India after 6 months when exports commence.

With heavy localization and production, the Jimny is expected to be priced under the Rs. 10.00 lakh mark and will be sold via Nexa chain of outlets of Maruti Suzuki. The carmaker is expecting a monthly sales volume of around 1000 units every month for this small-little-capable offroader. It will probably retail under the Gypsy nameplate in order to capitalize on the strong brand image of the now-defunct SUV.

Locally produced Suzuki Jimny will be sold through Maruti's Nexa chain of outlets and could go on sale as the new Gypsy.

The Suzuki Jimny comes propelled with a 1.5L 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated K-series petrol motor that can be seen doing duties on the Ciaz, S-Cross, and the recently launched Vitara Brezza Facelift. The engine produces 104 BHP and 138 Nm in Vitara Brezza and is expected to come in the same state of tune with the Jimny as well. It gets a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque-converter gearbox internationally, However, only a 5-speed manual is expected to be available on the India-spec car to keep the costs in check.
