Tata Motors has announced that the premium 45X hatchback, which is slated to be launched in late 2019, will be officially debuted at the Geneva Motor Show.

Due to the strict tax policies in India, the length of the production-spec version will be reduced to under 4,000 mm from 4,253 mm in the concept one. Moreover, the Tata 45X will have a less muscular and smaller body design than its concept model. The super large 20-inch wheels will give way to a set of new 16-inch wheels. The polishing wraparound headlamps will also replace the super slim units on the concept model. Other discarded features include

  • The grill-free front fascia

  • The bonnet that sticks out too much

  • The split rear spoiler

The interior has been spied before with quite a few similar features to the Tata Harrier. Underpinned the Tata 45X will be the Advanced Modular Platform (also known as the ‘Alfa-Arc’), which will also support all new products from Tata Motors which cost under INR 10 lakh. The Tata 45X is likely to be powered by an all-new 1.2L naturally aspirated 3-cylinder petrol motor and a 1.5L diesel engine borrowed from the Tata Nexon. Moreover, for the first time, a Tata product will be equipped with an optional mild-hybrid technology. Transmission duties are expected to be implemented by a 6-speed MT gearbox and a twin-clutch automatic gearbox for the first time with a Tata product.

Once launched in India, the Tata 45X premium hatchback is expected to be priced in the range from INR 6 lakh to INR 7 lakh. In this price range, it will compete against the Honda Jazz, the Hyundai i20 and the Maruti Baleno.

Another long-awaited product from Tata Motors is the Tata 45X EV, which is expected to be also unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, but in concept form. The Indian auto buyers will have to wait until early 2021 for the production model of this battery-powered vehicle to be launched in India. It will also be underpinned by the Advanced Modular Platform, which has been designed to support electric motors from the beginning.
