Last month, 1,147 units of the Altroz were sold, which helped the new Maruti Baleno-rival outdo the cheaper Tiago by 20 units.
With the launch of the long-anticipated Tata Altroz, the home-grown automaker has participated in the premium hatchback segment for the first time ever. While it's the first time the carmaker is participating in the B2-segment, the company already enjoys a representation in the A2-segment in the form of the Tiago. The Tiago has been selling in decent numbers but the warm welcome that the Altroz has received has helped it outperform the cheaper sibling.
Tata wants to make its Altroz become a formidable competitor against the segment leaders like Maruti Baleno and the Hyundai i20. While achieving this is still a difficult and long process, the Tata Altroz has attained its first achievement as the best-selling Tata hatchback last month, outdoing the Tiago with respect to sales numbers.
The Tata Altroz outperformed the Tata Tiago in terms of sales numbers last month.
1,147 units of the Altroz were sold last month, which helped it become the second best-selling Tata car in India, after the Nexon. The Tiago was ranked the third position with 20 units fewer sold. Since the whole country is experiencing a lockdown that started from March 24 and will last for 21days due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sales numbers of both of the two hatchbacks are expected to increase after the end of the lockdown.
The Tata Tiago keeps under its hood a single BS6-compliant 1.2-litre 3-cyl naturally aspirated Revotron gasoline burner which can deliver 86 PS against 200 Nm and is mated to a 5-speed MT/AMT. On the other hand, the Tata Altroz is powered by the same petrol motor as its smaller sibling and an additionally 1.5-litre Revotorq oil burner which can deliver 90 PS against 200 Nm. The transmission duties on both of the Altroz versions are undertaken by a standard 5-speed MT across all the variants. Tata has announced that an optional DCT will also be introduced to the premium hatchback later.
The Tata Tiago receives its power from only one petrol motor.
While the Tata Tiago is priced from INR 4.6 lakh to INR 6.6 lakh, the Tata Altroz has a price range from INR 5.29 lakh to INR 9.29 lakh (all prices are ex-showroom). While the former rivals the Maruti Celerio, Maruti Wagon R, Hyundai Santro, etc., the latter competes against the Honda Jazz, Volkswagen Polo, Maruti Baleno, Hyundai i20, etc.
