The new turbo petrol variant of the Tata Altroz is likely to come with a DCT unit that will be a first in a Tata offering. The launch of Tata Altroz Turbo might happen this festive season.

Frankly, it's a bit sad that due to low demand, the JTP performance cars have been discontinued by Tata Motors. While there were some rumours that Tata was working on the Altroz JTP, it is now clear that the purported performance variant of the premium hatchback will never make it into reality. Instead, the company is working on a more powerful version of the current Altroz, which will likely be sold simply as he Tata Altroz Turbo. Of late, the turbo petrol variants of some models have regisered decent sales. The Volkswagen Polo GT TSI is clearly one of the biggest players of the game. We are also waiting for the Renault Duster Turbo petrol variant set to come to us sometime this month.

Marking the company’s first entrant to the premium hatchback segment, Tata Altroz is quite a major hit of the domestic-grown automaker in the Indian space. Recently, the new powerful variant of the Tata Altroz Turbo has been spotted completely undisguised for the first time in India. The test mule showed up in what appears to be a shade of Tectonic Blue, a colour option of the BS6 Tata Tiago facelift. There’s a “TURBO” badging mounted lower on the right side of the tailgate.

Just some months back, a “random” Tata Altroz Turbo test mule was spotted testing with heavy concealment on the busy roads of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. It should be noted that the Jayem Automotives based out in Coimbatore is the major supplier of the engine components including turbochargers for Tata.

Details on engines and specs of the Tata Altroz Turbo are yet to be revealed. It is expected to come with a modified version of the current 1.2-litre Revotron turbo-petrol engine that powers the Tata Nexon. There will be a standard 6-speed manual transmission and an optional DCT for the turbocharged Altroz – first in a Tata Motors model.

Currently, the Tata Nexon BS6 petrol can develop 118 BHP of max power and 170 Nm of peak torque. In the meantime, the Tata Altroz NA Petrol is tuned to produce 85 BHP and 113 Nm of peak torque. It is said that the Tata Altroz Turbo variant will be launched sometime during this festive season.
